In spring of each school year, we open registration for the following school year. This means that once the next school year is open, parents can register for the current year or following year. For the current year, we have perimeters in place to restrict what they can enter as their Start Date (we require 3 days out minimum). If we didn't, the system defaults to the current day. Since this feature is on, if a parent is registering for the next school year, they have to enter a date, i.e. know the first day of school. If they enter any other day, the system accepts it. If it's a day before the first day of the semester, the system will actually bill for that time. We also don't want parents to pick a day after the first day of school because they are ultimately holding a spot from the first day to their start day.
Improvement would be to make the "Allow Initial Start Date" criteria to be set on the Semester Level rather than the Room level only.

While you are registering families for the next school year you may want to adjust the setting to not allow initial start date selection. If this is not set, the system will default to the first day of the semester when program/room assignments are created.
You could turn the setting back on once the next school year has begun.
if we adjust the setting for next school year, then the current school year also would not have a start date option and will default to THAT DAY, rather than giving the 3 day minimum required for the current school year
